Re: COSMOS!
I was hoping that's what this thread was going to be about...
I've never seen the TV series, but I'd really like to.
I read the book and it was fuckin' sweet. Sagan has a way of presenting material that is usually very dry in a manner that makes it interesting to the casual reader. You will feel smarter after reading this book...and very insignificant in the universe.
I picked up "A Pale Blue Dot" a while back ago at the library, but didn't get to finish it due to a heavy load of school related reading and recreational reading has been difficult since Iraq for some reason. The 50 or so pages I read of it were pretty good and I plan on picking it up again sometime.
Carl Sagan. The dude was a genius.

Want to see this.
Re: COSMOS!
My friend Aaron K from the bay area did a song about Carl Sagan. Its his prog-noise rock band Shunga.

He also does sweet comics that I print for him. I guess I could hook you up if you want them.

Rhino, you're spot on with the way he can present the material on which he's writing. Dude makes you want to read more and more.
Seriously check out 'A Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark', first book i read of his. Blew my mind how he could open channels of thought in me.
Tylor:
we don't have Cosmos, it's something i've wanted to pick up for awhile, but i don't know how well it would do here. We just got Planet Earth though, shit's super tight.

Also, I used to love it that Art Bell used the, "Wanna take a ride?" line for his intro on Coast to Coast AM.

Haven't seen/read but would like to. My roomate bought a pretty sweet poster that we have framed in our living room. It's a picture of our galaxy and has a cool classic Sagan quote on it....

Re: COSMOS!
hey glad to see this thread went over pretty well.
yeah rhino, the way he presents information to the layperson is incredible, after every episode i feel enlightened.
a pale blue dot and a demon haunted world are definitely on my to read list. i kept it limited to cosmos and a conversation with carl sagan for now, cuz i'm really busy with work.
i'm about 11 episodes through the series, and its great. i'm thinking about renewing the dvd and reading the book along with them.

Re: COSMOS!
wasn't there an episode of family guy where they made this show suitable for rednecks & said god created the universe & that mountain dew was the sweetest drink ever!?!

Re: COSMOS!
i like seeing the new episodes, but after one viewing, i can stand anymore. i think adult swim has really killed this show for me. they ruined futurama for me too.
back to the topic at hand, i think i remember seeing some of the cosmos on pbs when i was younger. maybe it was a science class in high school.

storkus wrote: On another topic; I hesitate to post this, because I don't want to change the course of this thread, but Family Guy is the worst fucking show on television. So horribly unfunny, while it tries way, way too hard. It's like the show didn't get enough attention from it's parents, so now it's acting out, trying to make society take notice and think it's funny, no matter how stupid it has to be to get there. I hate that show so much.
Fuck it, let's go there.
I think Family Guy has it's moments, but yes, it tries to hard. I've seen some episodes, but it's never had my attention enough to really follow it. If I'm at someone's house or something and that's what they're watching, it's fine with me. Other than that, I don't go out of my way for it. American Dad was terrible.
Family Guy isn't quite as retarded as Mind of Mencia (that's the worst show ever, in my oh-so-humble opinion), but it's no South Park by any means.
I can't stand Carlos Mencia. The guy is seriously unfunny. It seems like nine times out of ten the people who use the "I hate stupid people!!!" angle need to look at themselves first. I'll say he's had a couple kind of funny moments, but he's way too predictable. The kind of person who likes Carlos Mencia is also the same type of person who thought "Ace Ventura" was hilarious.
Re: COSMOS!
Oh yeah, back kind of on topic:
Has anyone watched "The Universe" on the Hitler channel? It can be a little dry, I imagine it's nowhere near as interesting as Cosmos, but it has some decent moments.
