Police are trying to figure out who sent 53 pounds
of marijuana to Thomas Jefferson in Des Moines.

There are two reasons for a police investigation: It's
illegal to have 53 pounds of marijuana and the
person who opened the package was robbed inside
his own home.

The police report lists two victims: Tanor Jimmison
and Tanya Cano. Jimmison's residence -- 4412
University Ave. -- is funded through Youth Homes
of Mid-America (YHMA), according to police.

Officers said Cano has worked for YHMA off and on
for several years. She told police she checks on
Jimmison at least once a day.

On Tuesday a package arrived at the University
Avenue address. It was addressed to Thomas
Jefferson.

Jimmison, 17, reportedly took the package inside,
left for a short time with Cano and then both
returned a short time later. They went inside and
opened the package.

It contained some 53 pounds of marijuana, police
were told. Cano told officers she and Jimmison
wanted to tell a supervisor about the package but as
they walked to the door a man forced them back with
a handgun. He told them, "You're not leaving until I
get my (expletive)."

Jimmison told the gunman his (expletive) was on the couch. The gunman let them leave.

Police say they have the packaging material but the
marijuana was removed and taken from the
residence by the robber. The weight was listed on
the packaging.

Jimmison knew it was marijuana, police said,
because he poked one of two plastic containers with
a knife. When asked why he stabbed it, he said, "To
see what it was."

An officer told him it seem odd to stab a container.
He said he thought it looked like drugs. When asked
how it looked like drugs, JImmison answered, "It
looked like it couldn't be anything else."

No arrests have been reported.

Waterloo mom denies infant choked on bag of pot



Waterloo, Ia. — A Waterloo mother who was arrested last week is challenging the police version of the incident that left her facing child endangerment charges.

Amanda Mallit, 18, said her 7-month-old daughter didn't choke on a bag of marijuana as authorities claim. A relative took the bags of marijuana from her home before paramedics arrived, Mallit said.

Mallit was scheduled to go before a family court judge Wednesday, where it was expected the child would be placed with an aunt.



Mallit, who is pregnant, was taken to a hospital April 22 following an altercation with her sister. Her 7-month-old daughter came along in the ambulance.

Authorities allege the girl began choking, and a paramedic found a bag of marijuana in her mouth, according to court records.

Mallit said she wasn't aware of the marijuana allegations until later, when she was in the emergency room.

"She wasn't choking. They didn't pull anything out of her mouth," Mallit said.

She said police wouldn't show her the marijuana, and she questioned why medics didn't rush to the hospital and admit her daughter if the girl had the drugs.
