No care ever on this. If you want to keep smoking quit bitching and pay the prices. It's an unnecessary habit, end of story.

ilikehorses wrote:listening to music doesn't kill everyone around you. smoking, on the other hand, does. and no, the research is not flawed. just because you say it is, doesn't make it so. the only fuzziness between cigarette smoke and painful, untimely death is your (and other smokers, business men's) denial.

davo, if you want to cause yourself years of suffering, do it to yourself. i feel bad for your kid(s). because he is suffering too.
Yes I will do it for myself. It is my choice. The point I'm making is that the tax is wrong. I've never stated anything else.

Now on to the flawed study. The facts are this all of the studies have been done on spouses of smokers. Many of whom in fact smoked at some point in their life. These are people that lived in the same area of a smoker for 20+ years. Not someone that passes someone on their way into a restaurant or bar. The fact is there is no way to prove that short termed exposure to second hand smoke causes health effect. Sorry but think it through how would you prove that your exposure to smoke in a place of business or a outdoor park caused health problems. The fact that there has yet to be an independent study of any kind on second hand smoke. Both against and for have been funded by organization out to prove one or the other.

It comes down to this it is a luxury. Like a nice bottle of wine, cable TV or a night at the movies. Health risk aside it is greatly over taxed. It is easier politically to tax cigarettes then let's say buying a Hummer. Cause even though that Hummer is bad for the planet and causes bad effects on a gobal level. It's an easier sell to say we're taxing it to make smokers stop smoking. The reality is that they are addicts and will pay whatever it costs to continue smoking.

If the state was that interested in getting people to stop, they would not tax stop smoking aids at the rate they do cigarettes. I do find it interesting that they have began to give away 2 weeks supplies of gum and patches now but did spend a dime advertising it. They spent a lot on those JEL TV ads and Billboards though.

Yes, trans fats and junk food and the things you mentioned are harmful. But only to the person who is consuming them. Smoking hurts everyone within breathing range. That's the difference.

So stop crying and try to man up and quit cigarettes. Any further argument is wasted breath from people who are short on it to begin with.

The less money fed to the government, the better imo. As for smoking, I'm in no position or mindset to tell people how they should be living their lives.

Well, I'm guessing that they have to make a profit somewhere. Why not off the those the smoke "tobacco" in water pipes and drink shitty beer. Hey as long as they are trying to keep down the price of cigarettes for the working man, I may have a forth reason to cross the mason dixon line and enter the deep south Des Moines.

It may not kill you, but it can cause permanent psychological damage. When I was a kid, I was frequently trapped in a car for many hours on long trips to the grandparent's and was forced to listen to Barry Manilow and ABBA. It took me years to get over this, but I still have nightmares once in awhile. Just thinking about it now may set off a post traumatic stress disorder episode in my brain. If I go postal today, it's your fault. Thanks asshole!

They used to be able to get away with charging that much for tobacco pipes because they were the only place in town to get them for awhile. Now that they have competition with better prices, there's no need to go there unless you smoke tobacco.

Is the tobacco in nonfilters that much better or can you save yourself three bucks a pack and shave off a few years of your life by just cutting off the filters?

In most cases I have no problem with taxes as long as they are funding worth while social programs. The sin taxes have always been used as a way to boast tax revenue with limited political risk.

If anything I'm a moderate Democrat. I strongly believe in socialized medicine, education and utilities. free speech no mater what, complete separation of church in state to the point where if a religion wants to get involved in politics it should be taxed and taxing the hell out of the rich but I also believe in a fair free market and trade and smaller government. It's not an easy fence to walk all the time. In a lot of way I'm more conservative then most of those that call themselves conservative.

okay, so i'll agree that the tax on cigarettes are dumb. but i think that smokers should have to pay SOMETHING for all the health risks they are causing other people. because deny it all you want, but smoking does kill non-smokers.
Even today, I can't see a car run a red light without instantly having an image flash into my head of a man's erect penis, penetrating a watermelon.

i understand this, and i respect it. i respect other peoples health and happyness and when im at a resturant or something i smoke well away from any other patrons. my decision to poison myself is my own and i am cool with going outside into a parking lot to smoke (in the crazy cold)so as not to invade on people who choose no to smoke or for the sake of kids. the only time i dont follow that rule is at a bar where people damage themselves anyways. i dont think its right to force my smoke on people but i dont think its right for people forcing me out of my own choices either.

Penalties
Penalties exist for purchasing cigarettes brought into Iowa from another state, by mail, or over the Internet without the Iowa cigarette stamp affixed. Only 2 packs of cigarettes can legally be brought into Iowa at a time. Penalties start at minimum $200 per purchase in addition to the cigarette and sales/use taxes due. Also, the cigarettes may be seized. http://www.state.ia.us/tax/forms/cigtob.html

theres an interesting excel document with state enforced minimumson the same page
71-023 Minimum Legal Prices on Cigarettes effective March 31, 2009 ( Excel)

I've broke this law time and time again by just buying 3 packs at a time every time I went out of state. So how does this work for ordering boxes of cigars over the internet? They must have changed the wording on this cause it used to only cover the resell of cigarettes. If the items is for personal use it should fall under federal interstate commerce not the state. I'm guessing this is enforced as well as the law on paying sales tax on items out of state online or through mail order.

I ain't talking about Canton. I'm also not saying anything bad about the Smoke Shop. They serve their purpose; cheap smokes and cheap pornos. Some places have cheap beer , but expensive smokes, pornos and papers. I paid $3 and some cents for a pack of orange Zig-Zags at a Git-N-Go once. I felt like I got raped, but i had good herb and didn't want to waste it in a pop can. That's just the way it goes.

Why buy a thousand dollar bong, when I can drive the Geo up to Minneapolis and buy a sweet glass bong for $46 at The Electric Fetus and then stop at White Castle on Lake & Blaisdale for some delicious Slyders before I head back to Iowa?

I have tried the Volcano. It is quite good. I'm hoping somebody will buy me one for Christmas this year.

Know Name is way better. Shit, even Down in the Valley is better than the Fetus. I suppose the 'Castle is worth going North of Richfield for, though. The one on South Lyndale doesn't have the same charm.
