515 Crew's All-Time Greatest "Left Wing"

Post by El Rhino » Sat Aug 23, 2008 5:42 pm

So who would it be? I'm looking for the most effective and thought-provoking one.

-@nonymous. He certainly has longevity going for him and is usually at the forefront of threads with that sort of subject matter although it seems like he's losing steam as of the past year or so.

- Eddie Ilikehorses. He seems to have toned it down as of recent, but he's been known to get behind some "interesting" ideas on this forum. Probably the most likeable.

- DestroySemioticRegimes/DonPeyoteLaGauca/Jeff An old one here. This guy was bat-shit crazy, hot tempered and probably too smart for his own good. Mix that all together, you get some interesting posts. I liked arguing with the guy.

- Glynnsea aka "Nigger Claus". Definitely wins in the avatar category. I remember the guy pretty much following suit with @nonymous, but maybe you remember him as being more convincing than I do. Responsible for the notorious "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" thread about protesting homophobia and racism in the scene on the steps of the capitol.

That's all I can think of that stand out. Maybe in a week or two I'll make a "515 Crew's Greatest Liberal" thread. There's some stiff competition in that one between Robdigi, Storkus and Elliot.

Anyways, I vote for DestroySemoitcRegimes. I'm still not even sure what that SN means. I found the guy thought-provoking, entertaining and it wasn't easy getting anything over on the guy. @nonymous did seem to have a bit of a pied piper effect on other "left wings", but DSR seemed to have more with all of those "FSU house" dudes and a few others from Eastern Iowa. Then again, the board was a lot more left-leaning when he was around so he had a better environment than @nonymous does now.

while i typically loathe the term left-wing, as it generally implies reformist politics and other nonsense, i'll toss one in for myself.

i've been steadfast with my contempt for some of you goons and your ideals, and will continue to do so.

this is the first time i've voted in years.

I vote for the Jeff fellow. He was usually funnier than @. Without that aspect, they are in a dead heat.

to be fair, i think a criteria needs to be established to accurately gauge the 'leftness' of said candidates.

for example; @ seems to be a bit more proactive, while ed is much more reactive...does one approach trump the other?

i'm not familiar with the other two people's work, so i can't really comment.

I believe Storkus falls squarely into the "liberal" category and is thus exempt from this poll. Try again.

i stand by my vote. poll title is "greatest 'left wing,'" which storkus falls into.

otherwise, i can't pick between those dudes. love them all.

Crumpty was taken into consideration briefly until I decided he falls squarely in the "liberal" category - like Storkus.

If either one of them considers themselves in the same boat as @nonymous, Ilikehorses and Glynnsea then fine, I'll consider them. Until then, they do not count.

For the sake of this thread:

"Left wing" beliefs are anti-authoritarian, anti-government, populist (and perhaps socialist) beliefs. "Extreme" or "radical". Solving issues via direct action on a local level rather than through government or gradual social change.

Liberal beliefs are populist, pro-worker, pro-civil rights, yet not anything near socialist- liberals prefer to play within the bounds of our constitutional democracy and understand the benefits of market capitalism yet know that an unregulated market prevents a fair playing field and works against people's ability to succeed within that system.

To oversimplify it: liberalism is the mainstream, pragmatic version of "left wing". (I say oversimplified because there are plenty of other nuances that make them quite different). Similar core beliefs, but different ideas of how and to what degree they will be implemented.

...just like "right-wingers" and conservatives can hold very different views.

What? Left wing Libtards want more and more government. Anytime a libtard doesn't like something, they cry to the government about it. The smoking ban is a great example.

Pro worker? Is that why the Libtards in government extort the money I worked for so they can give it to people who are too lazy to work? How is making me pay for somebody elses crack cocaine and malt liquor populist and pro-worker?

Konservatives are just as bad. They just have different ways of going about fucking over the taxpayers.

So... what you're saying is that you view the world through inaccurate caricatures and hyperbole, and have no idea what you are talking about?

AND you're libertarian? Who'd have thunk it?

Unionization, workers' rights, health care, and higher minimum wage.

All anti-worker policies.

On the other hand, let's deregulate business so they can exploit more of the working class and FORCE them to go on the welfare you so misguidedly hate!

Yep. The unions rip off workers more than they help them. They take money from union members and donate it to Demacommie politicians who in return take more of the working person's money so they can use it to bribe welfare rats into voting for them. Higher minimum wage doesn't do much good when the government is stealing half of your paycheck.

Nobody is forced to go on welfare. If your boss in an asshole, work some place else or get your own hustle going. It's a pretty simple concept. It's not that hard to find a job unless you're a lazy fuck. Why does an adult need unions and the government to get them jobs?

Do you not see the irony in a sleazeball dude who is approaching middle age yet still living in squalor telling other people to get their shit together?

Anyway, see above re: caricatures and hyperbole.

At least my squalor isn't paid for by other people and I don't expect the taxpayers to support my drug habits.

I may be a sleazeball, but I'm damn good at it.

i dont think you oversimplified at all. im not gonna argue, im just gonna explain my opinion- left wing covers everything you posted above its a generic way to group it together. i do understand why some people get upset about being grouped together. its no different than punk rockers stereotypes i.e streetpunk pop punk emo hardcoire thrash etc...
