There's a place around Johnston you can go, I think it's a "budget storage" on Merle Hay Road right past I-80 (or is it still 35 there?) a couple blocks. They let bands practice in there.

when i played with in loving memory, we practiced in a storage space, but evenutally all the neighbors complained and the cops would come. but hey, you can still try that.

Pud played in the Budget storage for a few months with no problems.
The only place close enough to hear you was a hotel.
It was $100 a month for a space like a one-car garage.
But there's no heat.
You get one power outlet and one overhead light.
It's not that great, but it works if you're tough enough.

check with the storage place out in pleasant hill. i think it was $100/mo and they were cool with bands practicing. nothing nearby but a cornfield and the intertstate.

i got denied. i got my eye on a couple of tiny tiny houses tho. but id rather have a warehouse thats zoned for it. nothing worse than renting(or buying) a place to practice to get told you cant.

I looked into this last winter, and there's really only one space: 524 E. 6th St (same building as the Alba Restaurant). A lot of bands practice there already, but there were a few rooms still available to rent when I checked. Some rooms may have limitations on use due to adjacent businesses' open hours.
Our band is still interested in sharing a space with another band, if anyone else is looking...

I see your guitar went missing a while back, but why does that mean you can't rent a space in this building any more?

jerry refused to admit to police that it was broken into so the police wouldnt file a case. then jerry removed my name from the lease and put a pad lock on our room so we couldnt use it even with our stuff in it. and all 4 bands couldnt use it, he never gave us a reason. after i confronted him which took me finding his home number and calling him there because he refused to talk to me at his business number and in person he finally removed the lock and we moved out. he told tj that i could never rent from him again but tj told him he removed me from the lease so i wasnt renting. it was a long time ago. he is a jerk and he charges a lot and goes back on his leases and changes everything like when you can have access and what you can do in the room. no band ive ever talked to has had a positive experience there.
i would rent there again but i would not leave any equipment there so it would have to be cheap.

Jerry is the absolute worst.
I can't help but notice that it's a little fitting how the only feasible practice space in Des Moines is run by an absolute asshole who makes people never want to work with him. Cool town, huh?
