I stopped going there years ago. I heard someone bought it and took all the vegan food off the menu. I don't mean to be one of those whiney "look at me" vegans. I'm asking because I never bothered to confirm it.
Does anyone have the lowdown on this?

They always take down my fliers because of the pot leaves on them. Java Joe's used to be a great place to score acid and kind bud the first few years it was open. Now it just plain sucks.

i went there all the time when i was young. i dont like their coffee so i stopped going. i aint against it or anything but i think that door was broke when it opened.

it has essentially the same menu, with vegan options, it always has. people complain about the new owners, but i haven't noticed anything different about the place. joe coppola owned it before and that guy is a fucking douchebag. not allowing metal posters with nuns having fetuses ripped out of them by lucifers epic cock or offensive words shouldn't come as a surprise. they're a business. some family doesn't want to come in and have their kids see a poster with tits on it or the word "cunt". no big deal.
that said, i've always hated the place.

Their coffee sucks, I think.
There used to be a book shop in the room next door. Years ago. I think it was the only place in Des Moines where you could read Maximum Rocknroll. But yeah their coffee tastes like burnt cookies.

i used to prefer caribous sumatra but i think it had more to do with being in the MOA than taste.

i hate java joes mostly due to all the painfully unhip people who believe java joes is the hippest spot in des moines. if i give directions to almost anything to a great number of young people who are not cool, i have to use java joes as a reference point. and it's not even a cool place!

i rarely patronize any of the places downtown and i dont drink coffee. java joes used to have good sandwiches and juice, thats all i know about it.

Anyone know if they still have House of the Dead? I used to play it all the time. I think $2.25 was the least amount of money I used to beat it once through.
