Let's talk about punk. (Davo hates Black Flag)

Post by jonnyROCKET » Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:15 pm

With the PIX thread, I was thinking...I don't hear much about current punk bands here, save for random ServoErgsLove. (yeah I know, they're not current anymore.)

Tell me about some of the up-and-coming punk bands doing cool stuff that you've been digging.

Good point. So, uh, what's going on in punk these days? I always feel a little out of it when there's the "year in review" type discussions and I have nothing to add.

Well, the mutts are still around and will probably be for another 10 years. Other than that, DES moines isn't really into punk rock these days. We have sort of drifted into the more hardcore side of punk. Prove me wrong everyone.

I have to say the last new punk band that I was really impressed with was the Vacancies and that was over 2 years ago.

Locally there really doesn't seem to be much going on. I know there out there but most of what I hear isn't all that great. Maybe someone should start one? You know just a "punk" band but with well written songs. Not Irish Punk, not hardcore punk, not gutter punk, Just plain old punk. You know rock n roll with a kick.

Hardcore is punk. I Don't like and they are not going to like me saying it but Hardcore is just another way of say your are into punk but you also dig metal but don't dig lyrics about Satan, Dragons and wizards.

well, not that we're relevant or anything, but the horseshoe spatulas have a new EP coming out pretty soon. I'd still call us a "punk" band for lack of a better term... new song up on the myspace. take a listen and tell me if you think its punk or not. we also shot a music video for the song that I'll post here soon.

Also, Annihilation Time is pretty much cutting-edge punk in my opinion. I mean they're definitely in sub sub-sub-genre shit but when it comes down to it they're just punk rock to the max. I realize it sounds like this is the only band i listen to. It's not, but it's the one "new" band that I'd still call punk that I actually totally dig.

Would you call the Bronx punk? They appear to be kickin it and they're pretty cool.

Also, there's this band up here in IC called Mannix! with a chick singer that seems to be pretty cool. I think they've been playing around a lot and even touring a bit, and I suppose you could call them punk....

I've been hearing tons of good stuff about these guys. I should probably check em out.
I dig the Bronx, and I'd call them punk, but their new album is really tamed down. Not the coolest thing they could have done.

the bronx were in iowa city a while ago and they fucking ruled. i love that goddamn band! and yes theyre punk, all those dudes are old ass LA punks and have black flag tattoos. theyre all mid-late 20s. the singer is balding HARD. and the new cd is not bad at all. they went through some growth and the new stuff is a bit more tame but it still kicks the shit out of 90% of the rock and roll shit coming out today.

So late 20s makes you old ass dudes now? Sorry had to chuckle a bit at this. Maybe we need to define "new". They have been around for sometime.

If we are going to date it back a bit, I have to add the Briggs and Die Huns.
