i have a hundred dollar gift certificate. ive been on the website for a while. i see nothing i want.

I can't stand Best Buy employees. A lot of them seem to hover in packs and speak to customers in a cocky and condescending manner, especially if you're not interested in the top of the line shit they offer. Many times it seems like they'll say "Can I help you with something?" in a challenging manner from afar, like you have no business in their department. I probably make more than three times what the average sales rep makes at Best Buy yet they'll still talk down to you.

haha after about two years of not being anywhere near a best buy, i was in the urbandale one three or four times in december. a certain albino spider works there, and he's lookin ROUGH.

Greg L used to work there when it was a good decision. Fireants worked in cell phone dept for awhile.

last time i went into an actual store i found a thin lizzy dvd that i wanted. when i went to check out they had the movie theater control corral winded around 3 times with 1 cashier working and 6 standing in the exit doorway bullshitting. there was 6 people in line all i heard was baron quoting pailhead " dont stand in line". i put the dvd back and walked out. i try not to go in anymore.

The funny thing is, Tyler went into best buy with me, while I was trying to decide what to spend MY gift card on.

It was a tricky decision, and I still have about $40 left on it. I am severely uninterested in most merchandise.

An old friend of mine worked there as the security guy up front. He would always do hilarious shit like order 100 egg rolls to Best Buy from Dragon House and watch all the managers and shit run around asking everyone "Did you order 100 egg rolls?"

Edit: It seemed like 10-15 years ago Best Buy's music selection used to be a little more "edgy". I remember finding all kinds of punk standards (Fear, Black Flag, Agnostic Front, etc) and even some really good classic Trojan reggae (before the days of all the 3 disc box sets they flooded the market with) there, even at the South Side one. The West Des Moines one had a better selection. Now they don't have shit.

I don't see how it would be hard to find something you like in Best Buy. You know they DO have CDs by like, good bands, right? And good movies. Just like any other store that serves the public.

Maybe you guys just have jacked up taste. I dunno.

Go check out the music part of Best Buy. There's actually some sweet stuff.

Really? That's probably why I didn't see any there. Might as well make the best of that gift card though.

I actually don't like cds all that much. If I could get a LP of the same record, I'm not going to buy some silly compact disc. AND all the other money went towards movies. I just don't feel like buying more movies.

Yes Bestbuy has been cutting back on their CD selection for sometime. When they first came to Des Moines in the early 90s, you could find shitloads of stuff from old punk and hardcore to hard to find folk and jazz. They ran a number of small local and regional chains out of business cause they sold their CDs about $3 to $5 cheaper and you could always find something. To be completely honest they were a god send to me. No longer did I have to drive 2 to 3 hours out of town or special order something, I could just walk in there and buy it. I might add that most of the local stores at the time didn't stock anything other than a few punk records, maybe some weird jazz and blues and lots and lots of pop music.

Now it was their game plan to take over the market by having more than anyone else in town and it worked. However over the last 10 years or so they have been slowly slipping their stock to a more safe and mainstream market. The one on the south side used to take up half the store, now there is like maybe 5 rows? The one on University seems to over stock better selling CDs to make it look full when in reality there is less and less different artists.

You can blame it on digital media and online music but Bestbuy has been reducing their CD stock to make room for musical instruments for some time and they are expanding and I'm sure their prices will be well below the local store or Guitar Center.

i got fear, black flag, misfits, samhain, and a ton of compilation cd's there when i was 15 or 16. so they still had some decent stuff a bit back. not as far back as you old balls remember, but before pirating music was the norm.

crispin - i also got a fueled by ramen sampler there once.....when only half the bands on that label sucked.

i got a measly 20 bucks on my gift card. will be buying the dark knight and pineapple express with mine.

Buy some fucking Bloodrock and Atomic Rooster. Buy a box set. buy some back-up discs. get some first act shit. soft core porn.

you guys can give me your gift cards. i'll go get a couple dvds and i won't complain about it. just sayin.

I went there to spend MY $50 dollar gift card but couldn't think of anything to get either. I also saw zarrie who suggested a lower class brats DVD that I did not get. I'm saving my gift card to use til I can afford a new reciever and eventually a new turn table. I did play drums there for about 20min and the people in the musical instrument department were MUCH more friendly than at guitar center.

Never been to Guitar Center but I have to say I always have this image of a bunch of middle aged glam rockers drooling over the guitar they couldn't afford when they were in that bitchen Gun and Roses cover band trying to impress their bored looking teenage son in the Slipknot t-shirt.

You know I found myself in the same situation a few years back. Couldn't find a CD or a movie that I wanted. Ended up getting blank cdrs and usb cable. It kind of took the whole thrill out of it.

I was talking to a friend about this the other and she asked where there was to buy new CDs now in Des Moines. I thought about it and realized there is ZZZ, Burns and Noble, Boarders, Bestbuy, Target, the used CD place and Walmart. Even the mall stores have died. Is there any other place?

There is still seems to be a number of used places but from time to time I want to buy a new release. Yes I could download them but there is something about having the CD in hand or on the shelf that can't be had with a digital file.

i try my hardest not to buy cds, i like records, cds take the fun out of the ritual of listening. i also try really hard not to buy movies i have a few boxes of them and i dont really rewatch more than 25 or so. the red dawn suggestion is a good one though.

ill probably just buy more Nina Simone box set stuff

There's not many reasons to buy CDs over vinyl these days.. most vinyl records come with a DRM-free digital download that you can burn to CD if you need to play it in your car, etc. Pretty brilliant marketing on behalf of record labels, I have to say.
