620 house?

I've noticed a lot of shitty bands that try to get on shows at the Haunted Basement end up playing some place called the "620 House" located on NE 46th Pl. Has anyone been here? What's it like? I can't imagine it being sweet since bands like this: http://www.myspace.com/cth play there.

Anyway, yeah, talk shit or get the fuck out.

So how can a house that does shows have a "bartender" and "security"? It kinda sounds like they need a liqour license and I don't think they give liqour licenses to random houses. Sounds kinda shady :? Doesn't sound like these fools will be around to long

i've been to a bunch of house/space shows with a "bar". i actually said something to joe (i think) about the hb doing something like this to bring in a little money to help with upkeep of the place.

Has anyone who complains about low turnouts at shows and talks about "scene building" tried to reach out to these guys yet?

The law is pretty straight forward with the selling of alcohol. No one without a license can sell alcohol for profit. So if they are selling booze they are bootlegging and they will get busted for a heavy chance of some real prison time.

Now that said, it's pretty wide open on BYOB. As long as you are not selling it, people of age are allowed to drink it. I'm unsure about running a private locker style bar. Where people bring in a bottle and then pay for a cockage fee for allowing them to drink it and uses of barware and mixes. Why you would take the risk for such a small profit is beyond me. It is a lot of risk.

The other problem is when does the basement go from a "private" party to a full blown venue. One of the main reasons that DIY type venues get shut down is there isn't a clearly defined legal definition and the authorities do not know how to regulate it. There isn't a set of regulation defining what is allow and not allow and it really makes their heads spin. If it is run like a business with sales tax permit then it should fall under the normal rules of a business like capacity, fire code and etc... but if it doesn't have a sales tax permit and is running like a business shouldn't it have a sales tax permit? More often then not they simply want to be able to send the police in there to find out just what the hell is going on.

Since the city seems to have defined what a venue is thanks to the DMMC, I wonder if it would be easier now then it was to set up a full blown non-profit business? This would allow HB and others to come out of the underground and operate at a level that could maybe make a bigger difference.

So how does one become a moderator of this site. I'm sure I can change post I don't like anytime I wish too.

I'm starting to think that maybe one of them has a little gay crush on me.

Like I posted earlier and then one of the moderators changed my post. Working together to create a better scene would be very un-Des Moines like.

The thing is, though, most people will agree that blending hardcore and scenester pop would end poorly for everyone involved, and that our scene would in no way improve. Also, they obviously don't want to mix scenes, so why should anyone here be at fault for agreeing?

The dudes in same sick feeling post bulletins about show attendance...yet I haven't seen any of em at haunted basement shows..or any vaudeville shows either...and maybe that's a good thing but all those dudes are idiots.

It says on the 620 house myspace they won't book local bands either...way to support the scene...

except of course their own.

we should all seriously go to a show there, just too see what it all about. May be good for a chuckle.
