I thought those things kinda looked like they'd just been taken out of the box and there was still styrofoam (sp?) left on them.

I think all Russian tanks should be decommissioned, broken down, and made into free Big Muff pedals for everyone!

three questions about this situation:

1)could this be a sign of russia wanting to be a soviet union again?

2)will we have sweet james bond movies with sweet russian villians again?

3)will yakov smirnoff be able to do valid stand up again?

1. Those tendancies have pretty much always been there, or at least to be able to exercise the same amount of pull they had in the world. The United States is still the world's top dog and China has been picking up a lot of the slack that the USSR had in the third world, namely Africa. Russia still has some influence in the world, but nowhere near what they had. Countries like India, Cuba, Iran, Venezuela and North Korea that were affiliated with the USSR have also empowered themselves a little more since those days.

Russia pretty much has the Caucus region and Serbia, that's it. Some of the Caucus countries and Central Asian Republics are also friendly with the US even though they've still got ties with Russia. It must be a little frustrating to Moscow to see the world lined up like that... NATO keeps expanding Eastward and the US is setting up shop in the Mideast and Central Asia (bases in Khazakstan, a small presence in Georgia). Plus the Chechnya thing hasn't given Russia any prestige in the world.

It's hard to tell who's right and who's wrong here. On one hand, it sounds like Russia is coming to the aid of ethnic Russians who no longer wanted to be a part of Georgia and on the other, the Russians are violating Georgia's borders.

2. Aren't Russians still portrayed as evil in pop culture?

3. No care ever.

It's a little embarrassing that we cannot help out Georgia a little more actively (although I think they might be partially in the wrong, not sure) but I don't know if taking on Russia is a good idea right now.

Now Russia's saying that the response to our new missile defense system in Poland is going to go beyond diplomacy. No link on this yet.

I'm moving to Colorado.

I always thought of Iowa as pretty safe, like a missile has to travel pretty far to get all the way to here, hopefully it could get blown up before it got here.

Yeah maybe. Stupid Omaha has that strategic base or whatever it is though, so I dunno. Mostly I said that because if the kids in Red Dawn can hold off the Russians there, I probably can to.

Missles from Mother Russia can go over the North Pole, not just East to West, so Iowa is well within range.

During the Cold War the DoD estimated that Des Moines would be hit with anywhere from one to several nukes. One plan showed one dropped over downtown, another one just West and just East of downtown and another one over where I-35 and I-80 meet and then downtown. I guess Des Moines was somewhere up on their priority list because of the I-35/I-80 intersection.

Yeah, mine was too until I took a flight from California to Germany and the in-flight travel monitor showed us going over Greenland and I was like "WTF?, Germany is down there". I've heard that flights from the US to Moscow don't take as long as you would think if you go over the North Pole.

so through my job i have access to a extended cab bio diesel truck, an unleaded dump truck, a bio diesel tractor, about seven or so chainsaws (including one pole chainsaw which i got to play with yesterday and it was awesome), as much unleaded and bio diesel as i can transport, about 3 police style pistol grip shotguns with ammo (and probably a few sidearms), and a ton of hand tools (mcclouds, picks, polaskis). so when the shit hits the fan i'm heading straight to our saw cache and stealing the big truck, guns, tools, etc., heading to the yards and filling everything i can with fuel, and then into the foothills where i'm going to build a cabin and kill anything that comes near me.
and i'll probably bring some green.

Sure the M1 might not have reactive armor (that it doesn't need) bolted all over it. But I guarantee operators of Russian tanks are WAY more scared of M1 series tanks than M1 series crews are of them.
