is this the nhl team i keep hearing we're going to get?

someone confirm, im not searching.

please tell me they arent serious about calling it "chops"

its the Ducks farm team.

i also heard from a few people that this is the new minor league team name.

Here are some reasons i kinda like it.
1) No other hockey team is named this.
2) they can do lots of fun things with it ( pork chop eating contests and so on)
3) the Anaheim Ducks jerseys sucks anyway

reasons i don't like it.
1) Ducks fucking rule, i dont like the new logo but there still the ducks.
2) the Des Moines MIGHTY Ducks or the Iowa Ducks sounds catchy.

Zach, this is not an NHL team. This would be an AHL team, which would be one step directly below the NHL.

Former Des Moines Buccaneers coach Bob Ferguson was named Iowa's assistant general manager Tuesday and will live in the Des Moines area.


Fuckin' A! That's actually kind of exciting. Bob Ferguson was a hell of a coach for the Bucs and I wondered what he went on to do.

I feel decently good about it. I don't like to see the former players go, namely Bryce Westgarth- he was the Stars' enforcer. After the shock of hearing we'll indeed be named the "Chops" wore off, the potential for a lot of fun with the team became a bit clearer.
First the aesthetics of the team are way better. We don't have a boring logo, that is almost exactly like our affiliate. We now have a "real" AHL logo, with good colors. It was always REALLY obvious on nights with poor crowds how empty the Arena was, due to the seats being red, and our fans being dressed in green. Now, if we have a crappier night with attendance, it might not look so bad. Our mascot could end up being way sweeter now too. Shooter (the raccoon) was fine, but we were the Stars, not the Bandits or whatever else you might associate with a raccoon.
Second, there is a lot of potential for getting attendees to become fanatics. While a chant of "quack, quack, quack" followed by hundreds or thousands of duck calls after would have been really fun, a pig call could work too. And, for tailgating, pork is a prime meat to have. Although, I am curious what we'll do for an intro when the players take the ice now. Maybe they can skate out of a giant flaming pig's head, similar to the Chicago Wolves intro.
Third, and most importantly, we could bring in a team that wins at home. I don't know the roster, or their previous records, but if they win at home, we're going to be in a much better place than we were last year.
Anyway, I'm cool with it, and I'm looking forward to wearing a Chops sweater all season.

It's also worth noting that people don't watch minor league hockey the same way they do minor league baseball. If someone gets pulled up to the Ducks or the Stars or whoever else, who gives a shit? None of the people going to the games pay attention to the NHL anyway. .

Not exactly. I think it's more of an issue of the contract with the Dallas Stars (hate that team) being up and a better deal was found with the Mighty Ducks (hate them too). I think the mildly low attendance with the Stars was probably offset by corporate sponsorhip, but I don't know anything about how they actually did financially.

You're wrong that people don't get into minor league hockey in the same way that people do with minor league baseball. There are many teams with devoted fan bases and the Stars aren't one of them. I haven't been to a Bucs game in years, but as a kid I used to go all. the. fucking. time. The USHL was (and might still be?) a great example of this. No one is going to travel to see the Stars play, but this happened frequently with USHL teams. Hell, I knew some guys that went to Thunder Bay, Ontario to see a Bucs game up there. The Omaha vs. Des Moines rivalry was probably one of the best ones in amateur sports.

Storkus - Stars wanted their farm team closer to them so it made sense b/c of location and also dwindling attendance (however Minnesota is still in houston go figure). Also Stars promotion was not the best. Chops promotion has aleady generated interested because of lowering of all ticket prices. Half season tickets are now only 120$ for 14 games of your choosing. Boss. I watch NHL and so do alot of people around here.
