THE WEIRD WEEDS
This Austin trio's previous two albums felt around for jazz, experimental, and improv, drawing their instruments out in oft-unsettling configurations. On I Miss This, their first for Austin label Autobus, they've gotten past the cocoon stage and emerged more tactile. Opener "You Drive Me Crazy" is almost Disney-esque, a pretty boy/girl love song with harmonies – not something Weird Weeds have tried before, but it works. Guitarist Sandy Ewen, one of Austin's most overlooked talents, lets her voice shine and lull on the title track, echoing Syd Barrett in parts, and her junk-box guitar style fills "Green Thread" with Hitchcockian drones against Aaron Russell's plucking. Drummer Nick Hennies expands his playing, absolutely thundering on "A Goose," the song in which Weird Weeds finally detour into a breakdown of awesome proportions. I Miss This is Weird Weeds finally, well, growing.
Probably Austin's finest band. Definitely my favorite while living there for two years. Drummer Nick Hennies orchestrated and played with Jandek on his first U.S. show. Perhaps the most original and wholly bizarre pop act you will ever encounter and one of the best live bands around. Their first trip to Iowa. Do not miss.

WOLVES IN THE ATTIC
Members of Keepers of the Carpet. Your last chance to see them at the Practice Space. Wolves in the Attic just finished recording their debut LP "Electronic Hearts" with Patrick Fleming (The Poison Control Center, Bi-Fi Records) and Patrick Stolley (DAYTROTTER, Future Appletree). Look for it in the coming months of summer.
Wolves in the Attic came about when Eric Moffitt and Nick Parks met by chance on a mutual friends couch. Nick was fresh off a bus from chicago after a stint in film school. They looked deep into each other's magical eyes and decided to form a band. This band was very short lived. Three years later, Eric was looking to form a band and needed a bassist. He remembered where Nick was living and went and drug him out of bed to come practice. Trent was in Florida, and when he came back, he too had the magical gaze, he was an instant fit on drums. Justin's gaze was stronger than the rest of them combined and he magically transported himself from "The Coffin Flyz" (NICK too) and finished out the brutal rhythm section.
