W-S BURN, EVAN MILLER, TWELVE CANONS AMES+IOWA CITY MAY 8/9

W-S BURN
Simultaneously stark, intense, warm, and involving duo - Steve plays guitar (acoustic and electric), and Pixie sings. She also strings metal and glass chimes from the shade of a floor lamp, which then serves as both illumination and percussion for their performance. W-S Burn have put out a few hand-made, lo-fi CDR releases but their sharp, highly focused emotional songs are best experienced live. Easily the most emotionally devastating live band I have ever experienced. Austin, TX/Knoxville, TN

EVAN MILLER
Miller's solo work cuts real deep, with deep echo's swimming around cut up tape maniuplations, leading into chambers of drone with his characteristic tonal vocals transitioning into finger picked sentimental ragas. Straight accoustic numbers and fingerpicking covers complement his honest, sincere and somber sound.

THE TWELVE CANONS
The Twelve Canons were formed sometime in 2001 or 2002 in Des Moines, Iowa. Frontman Jim DuRocher started performing and releasing material under the name as an outlet for an ambient, low-fi style he wanted to explore. After a few years of revolving lineups and musical styles ranging from honkey-tonk to pseudo-klezmer to straight up, stripped down folk songs, the band finally settled on a permanent core of members. The Twelve Canons now operate as a three-piece, with multi-instrumentalists Samuel Gold and Alex Body arranging and backing DuRocher songs. In the summer of 2004, the band relocated to Iowa City, Iowa. Once settled in Iowa City, the Twelve Canons recorded two sets of demos and released them as cd-rs. These demos represent an exploration of and an attempt to come closer to DuRochers stated ambition, to play evil, evil music. A third release is on its way, to be released in late summer 2006 by Minnesotas Floodwater Records. This record, Volume Three: Holy, Holy, Holy, continues the work of the first two. It combines folk, pop, and unbridled malevolence into one bitter, but ultimately rewarding package. EVIL, EVIL MUSIC.

no offense, but those descriptions just make that show sound like bores-ville. who wants to hear songs about love?

TONIGHT, W-S Burn performs at 4 PM on KURE today as well.

only description i wrote by hand was W-S Burn, Twelve Canons was their own bio and Evan Miller's was Shawn Reed. I wrote a pretty good description of Twelve Canons for a cover story on 80 hours in the Daily Iowan back in the day.

PLEASE come tonight and tell your friends...W-S Burn is perhaps the most emotionally devastating band I've ever seen. The songs aren't about love but Pixie will break your fucking heart.
