TooManyHumyns wrote:ok, first off, this thread isn't about the haunted squated basement, its about a new fresh, clean, nice central location to hold punk and metal and more shows that isn't rundown to shit and completely discrased by douchebaggery...the HB was awesome in its prime, but its gone way down hill,,,and has kinda run its course, especially if there is a better alternative at hand....i think many people would agree...especially when you have people who feel uncomfortable with going there for one reason or another, whether it be feuds with another person/s or just the atmosphere NOBODY should feel to uncomfortable to come out to support local/live bands....thats just shitty

anyways...i sent a long 'mission statement' to the lady who organizes all the events and explained to her that i/we would like to form a 'partnership' with her, to rent out the room for a small fee each month(or work trade) as opposed to 75bucks a show and to have access to use the main stage for larger shows/fests...this would give us access to the room at anytime and i or somebody else would be incharge of keeping track of all the shows...she seemed really intersted in finding a way to make this work out for us...and could see the benifits on both sides....i think there is a lot of potential here...i will post when i hear back from her again, im supposed to meet up with her either tonite or later this week to figure out our 'partnership'...this could be perfect...the only flaw to the room is that its a flat floor space, but building a little stage would be really east to accomplish, i am also going to speak to her about that...(although it isn't completely neccisary)
You hit it on the head. A lot of people don't feel comfortable at many of the venues in town for one reason or another. This could be a really positive thing and would be a great deal more visible thus making a bigger impact.

OK, fine, you went to shows and supported the scene for 25 years... So what? How does that make you know what's going on in the scene right now? This isn't about cred or being hardcore, it's about the fact that you don't go to shows but still act like you know shit about Des Moines's music. You say you don't go because there's shitty music, but not every band that plays the Haunted Basement is shitty. Sure, there are bad bands that play there, but there are just as many or more good bands. I'm really sick of you acting like you are entitled to respect or adoration just because you're old. If you aren't going to support the scene NOW, there's no reason for me or anyone else to give you respect.

I would also like to note that I have never felt alienated or uncomfortable at the Haunted Basement. I think bringing a new venue into play is a good idea, but because it will help our scene grow, not because I care about petty fights. While a "clean" venue would be welcome and no doubt preferred by some show-goers/bands, something needs to be said about what it's like to sing along with a band on the floor of the Haunted Basement, something that I haven't experienced at any venue with a stage.

Keep your fucking school yard wannabe black metal drama outta this shit. Joe quit the 515 and is acting like a child. Anything to do with his musical endeavors can be handled in Iowa City.

Is there any bands that want to fit the bill for July 12th at the social club?

BTW: Boycotting the haunted basement is for crybabies.

No I go to shows, I'm just a hell of a lot selective about the ones I go to. Last on the list would be 4 bands I've never heard of playing in some crash pad.

Yeah Wikipedia, great source.

First off, I could be wrong but isn't the Social Club in fact a non-profit art space? Also isn't it an open artist environment that supports freedom in performance? Doesn't it also rely on volunteers in day to day operation? Sound pretty much DIY to me. How is it any different from doing shows at the Botanical Center? Did they have a paid staff and volunteers?

Second off, DIY and basement shows started off out of a lack of other choices. It was a means to an end. This idea that some how DIY is some communist socialist martyrdom is complete hippie bull shit dogma. Bands play basements cause they can't play anywhere else, not because it's neat o or the punk thing to do. In case you don't know what DIY means, it's "Do It Yourself". Not cause you are following some stupid code but because if you don't do it no one else would.

Third off, do you really think that anyone outside of the little click has felt any impact or effect from shows at HB? Doesn't it in fact create an elitist underground circle jerk that buried so far up your own asses that no one outside of the group knows it even exists? It's one thing to open your door to everyone but it's another thing to in fact have a public impact. I understand all the reasons behind not putting your address on the flyers and not wanting to be fucked by the city but why wouldn't you embrace a chance to do shows in a place with a high profile, that is easy to find, affordable and open? Seems like the usually shooting yourself in the foot for the "cause".

Stop spreading rumors about me. If you aren't going to get your facts straight, keep my name out of your mouth.

I didn't "quit the 515" if I am still playing in a band based out of Des Moines and I am still helping with the promotion of shows at a brand new show space in Des Moines. How does me being smart and avoiding anymore drama because someone destroyed a piece of my MUSICAL INSTRUMENT make me a "baby"? Also, please stop putting words in my mouth. In no way am I "boycotting" the Haunted Basement because I want to have another show space. This is a way for me to get stoked on punk and DIY again.

Davo, the Haunted Basement is a well known DIY venue around the country, not just by 10 or 15 people in Des Moines.

For those not wanting to go to shows in basements... punk is punk is punk anywhere you go.

Anyway, if you all want to cry about the Haunted Basement, do it somewhere else.

The haunted basement is alive and well without you Joe. 1408 locust street (THE SOCIAL CLUB) has been putting on DIY shows without your help since the Flesh Keys were still based in Des Moines. Take your stupid blast beats and keep em in Iowa City.

Great, wonderful, good work.

When I say impact I meant, Impacting those that you don't know by name or the bands that base their tours the "Book Your Own Fucking Life" based networks. You know the real world.

Like I said before, I'm excited to see another venue that isn't in someone's house that is open to kids booking shows for kids and it has a bar.

So... all you can do (in a thread about opening a new showspace for punk and metal bands to help the scene grow and in which I've only said positive things) is shit talk me? Amazing.
Really though, if you want to claim a place is inclusive for everyone, making posts like the above in a public forum is not a good idea.

Anyway, onto something more productive and relevant to this thread:
James, hopefully I will have some of the screenprinted posters for the Witchhunt show done within the next few days. I will be stopping in Des Moines en route to Lincoln for the last Ghost Towns show, and if they are done by then, I will drop some off for you. If I don't... well, yeah, I'll have to get them to you at another date. If you have any handbills you can give me to pass out around Lincoln and Iowa City for this show, you should get them to me on the 30th or the 31st. I'll call you and let you know where I'll be and shit on those days.

Witchhunt is an awesome band playing in an awesome new showspace. Hopefully people are getting pumped for this!

I've been to shows at the Des Moines Social Club and played the Haunted basement once. I liked the Haunted Basement better. At the HB I didn't have to pay three dollars for a bottle of luke warm Bud Light ( I must have been really high to do that) and I could just throw my beer cans on the floor like a Viking.

The Haunted Basement reminds me of the places I used to party at in Minneapolis in the 80's. The type of places I'd pass out at and wake up only to find someone had scribbled a bunch of profanities on my face after I'd been riding the city bus home at 8 in the morning. I'd always wonder why everyone on the bus would look at me all crazy like.

The Des Moines Social Club is pretty cool and I like what they are doing, but the Haunted Basement is way more fun.

As someone who plays shows I think it's great to have a variety. in one hand I can sit down and buy a beer watch a show with my mom and not worry about her getting pushed around by some drunk idiot (like myself), and in the other hand I can get wasted play a show and smash a beer on some shit talkers head! it's a win win situation for anybody!

this city needs a lot more venues that cater to punk/ska/metal whatever shows we all like to go to. anyone that bitches about another place to play or go to is kinda fucked. I'm not into artsy fartsy fag shit but at least it's another place to consider checking out.

at least it's not another downtown hip hop club, or trendy rock'n'roll pussy bar.

I saw a bit on the Channel 13 news tonight talking about the Des Moines Social Club and how they are trying to get some 60 year old "dancing law" repealed or some shit? I didn't really catch what it was all about, but they talked to some dude there whose name was Matt Malver? Mather? something. Anyway, he seemed to have his shit together and really emphasized that "if we want to make Des Moines a premiere city, then we need to offer a place like this for people" or something along those lines. They showed a bit of the inside of the place it it looked pretty rad. I am excited about the potential of this place and how it sounds like they are willing to work with people to make this a performance spot.

So Dustin and I just got back from fixing what POTTER seemingly almost totally fucked up. So the Witch Hunt show is 100% confirmed. They took 25 bucks off the room rental fee. They seem very interested in regularly doing shows but we have to figure out the money thing and come to an agreement with that still. I will hope to have that figured out in the next week or so. So yeah. This opening show should be great.

Potter, i don't know what you were doing to fuck up, but i would appreciate if you just would have let me talk to them as i had planned and not go down there and doing it on your own, without knowing everything we talked about prior...cuz you really did almost fuck all this up, i know the intention was good, but really dood, i was really pissed off for a minute there. But now everything is ok, so no worries. First show should be killer, lets make a good first impression so we can do this more often.

bitchen camaro.

I have no idea what you're talking about, James.

Did I fuck up with keeping them waiting for you? Or maybe I fucked up booking a show you might not be interested in attending for July 12th? Or maybe I fucked up in all the volunteer work I've put in at the Social Club to get inside their good graces.

I'm not sure exactly where I fucked up and why you were butt-sore..

Anyways, I'm glad its all good.

You fucked up by butting your head in and trying to take responsibility for something you are not involved with at all. No one asked you to "forge an alliance" with anyone at all. James and Dustin are booking this show. You booking a show on the 12th and you volunteering at the place has nothing to do with anything. James and Dustin have booked and promoted shows in the past and they know exactly what they are doing and what they want done with this show, so stay out of it before you fuck anything else up.

when i get texts saying they will only do the show for 150 on the main stage, and then i get texts saying that show and future shows are now iffy. and then i get a text saying that its fucked...all these among other texts that you sent me add up to you fucking up in my mind...the show your doing is fine and dandy, thats great, but when i'm trying to do something, and ive already made some agreements and then you go in and then tell me all my agreements are fucked, there is something wrong with that...im not butt sore about anything...i think its great your trying to book shows and whatnot...but like joe said, don't fuck up our endeavors while doing it...they told us this shit that you agreed to in our name or whatever and it was wayyy outta line...if you wanna do shit seperate, then do it seperate, but if your going to incorporate your show into our ideas (like i asked if you were interestd in doing) then please go in there with me and know what the fuck your talking about...i do appreciate you getting them to stay, but that show was ALMOST totally fucked and that is not cool
