Two charged in theft of tip jar

Misdemeanor theft charges were filed against two teenagers who allegedly dashed out of the Mars Café, 2318 University Ave., Tuesday night with a tip jar.

Des Moines police arrested Raymond Edwin Conley, 19, and Austin Boyd, 17, both of 2027 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Conley was taken to the Polk County Jail and Boyd was taken to a juvenile facility.

The jar contained about $15 in bills and coins.


Police said Conley and Boyd entered the café with two others and complained about the prices. They left without buying anything. Conley and Boyd returned about 9:30 p.m., police said, and paced back and forth. Then Conley allegedly grabbed the tip jar and ran. Boyd followed him.

Police later located them in the 2200 block of Drake Park Avenue and took them into custody. The money was not recovered.

i'm pretty sure i saw these dudes walking past the store on their way to mars--i saw them running back by here with the cops following shortly behind.

no big deal. this sort of thing usually happens around here when it starts to get nice out; after a month or so kids chill out. it's happened to us plenty of times, until we cut a hole in the counter that prevents money from being taken. hopefully mars will make this change too.
