i agree, should have gone to the arl or humane society. that's quite a crazy amount to spend on a cat when you can get one that really needs a home from a shelter.

Well, we tried two different ARL locations with the mind set we wanted a kitten. When we didnt find one we decided to buy a kitten.

I agree. You coulda got a free kitten from the paper and donated the rest of the money to a shelter at least. Not trying to be a jerk but it really irks me when people spend hundreds of dollars on pets from breeders. Maybe I'm just overly-sensitive to this because when I think of Pumpkin being euthanized and not being my BFF4ever I get a little teary. Best cat ever.

We tried two different ARL locations and their website and couldn't find a kitten. We looked in the des moines register online classifieds and there were no available kittens at that time.
I searched for kittens available in iowa and the first thing I came across was the bengal I now own.

This isn't a typical thing for me to do, I don't spend money like that, and never have on an animal before. I personally have four cats at my house that were all strays, and there were probably five before that that were the same way. I obviously don't encourage the euthanization of kittens.

I wish I had 400 dollars. I'd buy 20 kittens and give them to all the poor, lonely children who can't afford one.

short answer...
its not very passive of me. i like animals alot. but i think theres something wrong with a nonprofit org that charges money for ....an abused/abandoned creature that you can find for free. yes you still have to pay for all the shots and crap but ... ive never had an experience there that wasnt negative.

negative how?

having a cat spayed/neutered and vaccinated isn't free, and it costs a lot to operate an animal shelter. it's only ~$100 to adopt a cat. if you think that is too much, perhaps you aren't committed or responsible enough to take care of an animal anyway.

Not to shit on your parade, but here's my experience with a bengal cat:

My brother had a surveying job. One time he was surveying out in the country during the winter, and he found a kitten in a ditch. It was freezing to death, so he took it home and nursed it back to health and shit. He and his wife decided to keep it. It was a cool kitten, really nice, it would play with you and everything.

Then...

It hit puberty or something and turned into the biggest asshole I've ever dealt with. You can't get near it anymore without it hissing and trying to scratch you ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It's not nice and it's the worst cat I've ever seen.

It's a bengal. Half bengal or something.

Just a warning.

-Joe.

non-profit doesn't mean they don't charge money. . .

like rob stated, it costs a significant amount of money to make sure an animal has all of its shots and is healthy. aside from that, the ARL goes to great length to make sure the animal is going into a responsible home. if you have other animals, how much living space there is, how many hours you work; all of these things are part of the process. even once you purchase the animal, they can still do routine checks for a period of time to make sure it's safe and healthy.

if you can't pay $100, you shouldn't have an animal.

not to say the place doesn't have questionable procedures, i just don't understand your point.

Cats are cold blooded killers. They will eat you when you die. That's why I watch my back and keep my cat hopped up on meow mix. Sometimes I sit her down and we both listen to Gwar's Licksore just so she knows I'm onto her. Trimming their claws is only a temporary means to an upper hand, bonsai kitten ensures victory.

Yeah, what everyone else said about the ARL. It costs a lot of money to run a place like that. Some of it comes from adoption fees, most of it comes from generous donations from folks like myself and many others. What you pay in adoption fees is generally far below the cost of what they put into the critter.

To say that they're charging for something you can get for free, I don't know about all of that. I guess I'd rather pay $100-some dollars and pick out a dog that meets my criteria rather than take my chances cruisin' around the barrio or something all day looking for a stray dog, hoping it doesn't have rabies or some fucked up diseases and has a temperment conducive to being a pet.

As long as we have assholes out there who get a pet because it's cute and then decide it's not cute once it chews something up, shits on the floor and/or actually takes a bit of responsibility and money to care for we will have the need for places like the ARL and the need for euthanasia. Also, as long as we have dickheads who think they'll earn some cash on the side by breeding mutt puppies and trying to sell them for $25 in the paper and then can't get rid of them, we will have the need for such places. As long as people do not spay/neuter their pets, we will have the need for such places. Such places will also require money, time and resources to run.
