Iowa City, Ia. -- Well-known Iowa City musician David Zollo faces drug charges based on police allegations that he tried to buy cocaine from an undercover officer and had cocaine and prescription drugs in his car.

Zollo, 38, has been charged with solicitation to commit a felony, a Class D felony, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. The felony charge carries a maximum five years in prison and $7,500 fine.

The charges stem from an April 20 incident in which police were arresting a drug dealer and his cell phone kept ringing, court records say. The officers answered the phone and Zollo asked to purchase heroin, records state.


Police arranged for an undercover officer to meet Zollo in a McDonald's parking lot, where the officer sold Zollo simulated cocaine, records state. Other officers then identified themselves and Zollo admitted trying to buy drugs.

Zollo allowed officers to search his car, where they found cocaine behind the driver's seat and four Darvocet pills, for which Zollo said he had no prescription, records state.

Although the incident happened last spring, Zollo was not charged until Jan. 30. He was arrested Saturday. Iowa City Police Lt. Dan Sellers said it is not unusual for several months to pass between an incident and criminal charges in drug cases.

His band, David Zollo and the Body Electric, plays hundreds of shows a year around the Midwest. He also owns a record label called Trailer Records.

Zollo said Monday that he has been through outpatient drug treatment since the incident.

"I take pride in my role in the statewide community, and something like this reflects really poorly on that. There's a lot of shame in letting down that public trust," he said.
