"Very, very sad news: It has been confirmed that Jay Reatard has died. He was 29 years old. More details are forthcoming. Goner Records writes, "It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public."

Reatard, born Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., was a staple of the Memphis garage rock scene for years before bursting on the national scene with 2006's Blood Visions and subsequently signing to Matador. His most recent album, Watch Me Fall, came out last year."

I never listened to his music or saw him live, but I heard even his biggest fans claim the guy was a total asshole.

I saw him live and it was fun. Some shitty band from Omaha showed up and wasn't down with me headbanging and having fun and tried to fight me, then one of them got a skateboard shoved into their face. THEN that fucking moron that always wears that stupid jean jacket from Milk & Herpes records got choked and pushed out of the Mews. Fuck yeah.

This is really sad. Jay Reatard is one of my favorites. I was hoping to catch him live next time he came through town. Fuck. He showed a ton of promise... every record he worked on was a steady progression of greatness.
