Re: bike porn.
Even today, I can't see a car run a red light without instantly having an image flash into my head of a man's erect penis, penetrating a watermelon.

I know. That whole area usually gets called the Drake area, whether or not it has any bearing on reality. Just like how where I live is "over by Easter Lake", which it is really not that close.ilikehorses wrote:kind of out of drake neighborhood area, just sayin. not many (if any) drake students live down that far.El Rhino wrote:"Police said John Deering, 46, was attacked in the 1100 block of 21st Street about 9:15 p.m. " Hmmm.... Re: bike porn.
looks like bicyclists will be a little more comfortable on Ingersoll now:
The Des Moines City Council has given its approval to a new traffic plan for Ingersoll Avenue.
At Monday night's meeting the council voted unanimously to move ahead with a plan that would turn the four-lane road into a three-lane road with bicycle lanes on each side. The plan will begin a six-month trial period in April, 2010. In October the council will re-evaluate the plan.
Some business owners at Monday's meeting argued the plan will create less traffic and fewer customers. But others argue it won't affect business.
The re-striping of Ingersoll Avenue will cost the city $7,500. The City Council will vote for a third and final time on the plan at its next meeting on September 14th.

Re: bike porn.
Ingersol and Grand both need something to slow down traffic though. People drive ridiculously fast down both of those streets. I will still keep the bike on the sidewalk, I don't trust DM drivers.

i dont think people drive that fast but thanks for staying outta the street.aeon grey wrote:Ingersol and Grand both need something to slow down traffic though. People drive ridiculously fast down both of those streets. I will still keep the bike on the sidewalk, I don't trust DM drivers.
Re: bike porn.
I get pissed when "share the road" type bikers ride down the middle of the lane and get in the way, but when it comes time for them obey a traffic sign/light etc., they are somehow exempt.
Re: bike porn.
Like those Critical Mass idiots who claim to do what they do to raise awareness for bicyclists but just manage to piss everyone off by taking up both lanes.Hank Fist wrote:I get pissed when "share the road" type bikers ride down the middle of the lane and get in the way, but when it comes time for them obey a traffic sign/light etc., they are somehow exempt.

ME TOO. and i think if the street is 35mph if a cyclist cant keep up he needs to get off the street.Hank Fist wrote:I get pissed when "share the road" type bikers ride down the middle of the lane and get in the way, but when it comes time for them obey a traffic sign/light etc., they are somehow exempt.
Re: bike porn.
the outside lane on Ingersoll is kinda sketchy to drive down anyway, a suicide lane down the middle will keep traffic moving, and a bike lane will keep bikers out of the street. I can only see an increase in business happening. I have never heard someone say they're not going somewhere because there might be too many bikers.joseph wrote:i dont think people drive that fast but thanks for staying outta the street.aeon grey wrote:Ingersol and Grand both need something to slow down traffic though. Re: bike porn.
People want to go 45 up and down Ingersoll. I rode my scooter on it many times over the summer and the outside lanes were basically a huge risk. There are assholes that open their car doors without looking at what is driving down the road, there are people that pull out into traffic from one of the adjacent roads not paying attention to oncoming traffic.
When I would ride in the center lane, jerks swerve around me as if going the speed limit was unreasonably too slow. I know there are a lot of cops on that road and I go the speed limit on my scooter because I don't have my motorcycle license yet and I don't want to get pulled over. But people in cars don't just want to speed, they want to go 10+ mph over the speed limit, and if you are at all obeying the speed limit, you are in the way. I cannot imagine riding a bicycle on that street.

Report them like you would someone driving a vehicle in this manner. I ride my bike in the street without problems 90% of the time. Its illegal for me to ride on the sidewalk.Hank Fist wrote:I get pissed when "share the road" type bikers ride down the middle of the lane and get in the way, but when it comes time for them obey a traffic sign/light etc., they are somehow exempt.

I honestly think there should be some sort of training and licensing program for bicyclists starting at age 14. This would give them knowledge of the rules of the road and the illegality (and stupidity) of riding bicycles on the sidewalk past age 14. There are obviously drawbacks to this sort of program, but I think everyone who rides a bike (or drives a car, for that matter) on the street should be well versed in the laws and know how to contribute to the safety of the roadway for himself and others.

Re: bike porn.
I'm all for bike lanes in Des Moines. The lack of them makes the city seem really 20th century. Go to most cities in California, for example, and pretty much all streets/roads/highways have bike lanes and people there have adapted to sharing the road with them.

For the most part, I agree with this. There are people who ride scooters who don't understand that scooters aren't toys, and it is important to know rules and the safety issues to riding in traffic. This is why I think everyone who has a scooter, moped or motorcycle should take the motorcycle safety course, that way they know their place on the road and don't think that they can weave in and out of traffic like fucking idiots.

Re: bike porn.
It may be legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk in DSM, but that doesn't make it a good idea. It's far more dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists alike. As a cyclist I don't see the appeal to riding on the sidewalk anyway- you can't go as fast, people get in your way, the surface is less smooth, higher likelihood of broken glass or thorns.. it just sucks.
If you're not completely incompetent it is easy to ride on the street without impeding traffic. Worst case scenario anyway is that the car would pass you just like it would pass another car... not a big deal, unless the driver has road rage issues.
They just enacted a law in Colorado that allows bicycles to ride two abreast on roads and requires cars to give at least three feet of clearance when passing. Take that, suckers.
