Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
Pretty much just a self-jerk off thread to brag, but I don't give a shit. Post pictures of cool places you've been recently.
My Dad, Brother and I went on our annual Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness trip last week. It ruled as always. We went further west than we have in the past. It was more desolete than over in the eastern Boundary Waters. We didn't see any people for the first 3+ days.
We saw awesome animals like:
Moose
Deer
Bald Eagles
Chipmunks
Also...Loons, Ruffed Grouse, Yellow-Bellied Flickers, Beavers, Otters, Pine Martins, among lots of other wildlife.
We ate and drank dudely stuff....like any good dudes should:
Ribeyes on the first night
Ribeyes done
A pound of bacon one morning
Black as shit coffee from the french press (which was a lifesaver on 40 degree mornings)
Walleye and Perch that we had just caught. Fucking delicious
Fish frying up
We even bite the bullet and lugged a six pack with us (which wasn't much, but tasted awesome when all you have to drink is lake water) The extra weight in our food pack from the beer was well worth it.
We caught fish:
We sat around under a tarp for the good majority of a day as it rained non-stop
But we also said fuck it, put on our rain gear and fished from shore
A few times, the bugs got really fucking unbearable, but you get used to it
They decided to leave me on stranded on shore and went off to go look for another campsite
So I got bored and took a few photos of myself
I took this picture of myself (before taking a shit in the latrene at one of the campsites) by setting the self-timer on my camera a setting it in a tree.
Some of the portages going from lake to lake really sucked
Especially when lugging around all this heavy shit on your back
The scenery was as good as it gets:
Devil's Cascade
River rapids
Sunsets
Rainbow

Hah...now that you mention it, it really does. I guess we had the camera framed up in the exact same spot and I took a picture of the sunset and then had my Dad take one of me and my bro.TooManyHumyns wrote:that second to last pic looks like photoshop...

Re: Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
Glad to see a thread that isn't about a pop-punk band.
This is a photo from the last time I went somewhere cool, which was London around Christmas/New Year's. It's the Thames River with Big Ben & Parliament from the Waterloo Bridge (thus "Waterloo Sunset")
A street near the Victoria and Albert Museum:
Not so recent (about a year ago) but two of my favorite travel pics. The first one is tango dancers on a street in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires and the next is a photo of Calle de Suspirios in Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay. It's the remnants of a Portuguese settlement from the 1600's.

Re: Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
I love Northern Minnesota. I did a little winter campng there about 60 miles north of Hibbing.
Here's some pics of my last trip to Minneapolis.
A place north of the Twin Cities on 169 by Ramsey. This place is the epitomy of seedy. of course, I had to go in and it was basically a porn garge sale inside. When the dude at the counbter starting telling me about the lubes on sale in a lispy voice, I got the hell out of there.
Minnehaha Falls frozen
Kind of looks like Joe Buck
I lived here about 20 years ago. South Minneapolis rules!
Dog in rearview

I'm on an awesome "vacation" in Rome for the next 2 months. I have a bunch of shit posted on my flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristyrahm) but I can post some highlights...
A ceiling in the Vatican
The Roman Forum
There is a cat sanctuary BLOCKS away from my studio!!
The views are all pretty epic.

Re: Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
All the pictures are awesome so far. I really need to get to London. Closest I've been is Dublin.

Nick wrote:. I really need to get to London.
I'm not sure exactly how things are at this moment, but I know as of recent it's been a great time to be in that part of the world currency-wise. The exchange rate when I was there wasn't bad at all.
But yeah, London is obviously a great city and worth visiting. I'm a huge Anglophile so seeing all the places I've been reading about for years was cool. Got chills watching a Shakespeare play (Twelfth Night), walking down Carnaby Street, singing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" with West Ham fans at Boylen Ground, being amongst drunk skinheads chanting "WHERE ARE YOU??? WHERE ARE YOU??? WHERE ARE YOU???" during the intro to "Skinhead Moonstomp", hearing a band perform The Jam (greatest band ever) covers and of course all the great art, science, religious and history related stuff - there's more of this sort of thing in London than one person could possibly fit in one trip.
Things I didn't like: The food. I like English food but there's only so much sausage and mashed potatoes that a person can handle. Besides that it seems hard to find a place that isn't Indian or a Middle Eastern donner kebab joint. I ate at a couple good Indian restaurants but that's another thing that gets old quick. Not much really stood out. I did start eating fish again after hitting up a really good fish & chip place though.
Re: Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
I would like to get up to the Boundary Waters area, but fishing bores the fuck out of me. I'd like to go up there for a few days and just hang out and canoe/hike around but I'd feel like I would have to do something....like fish.
My barber goes up waaay up into Northern Canada every year on a hunting trip. I'd like to go along just to hang out. I guess where he goes is about an hour flight from where the tree line ends and the tundra begins. It takes him 24 hours total to get there, 12 to drive to somewhere in Canada and then the rest of the time taking a plane to where the cabin is. He always brings the Indians/Inuits up there a large party sub from B&B and they know him as the "big sandwich guy".

Re: Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
I stopped in Dublin for a day... it smelled like pee everywhere and kinda just seemed like I was in Chicago or something. And I feel like I'd feel the same way in London. Maybe I'm just burnt out on urban centers, mostly just people the people everywhere. I'd REALLY like to see some country side or otherwise mostly unpopulated/natural part of Ireland or England. Flying over the coast of Ireland was pretty impressive and I'd like to see it from the ground!

Nice pics. What was up with the lawn chairs sitting in the street in NYC?
Re: Post pictures of awesome recent vacations
They had closed off a section of Times Square. I'm not entirely sure the reason why though.

That "submarine in the LI Sound" is pretty significant historically....
