Punk and Metal Shows @ the Des Moines Social Club...
so joe and i just went here, and talked with some dood named Geoff...and we have decided we want to try and start regularly booking punk and metal shows here...it costs 75bones to rent the room out. The room hes offering us is like the Haunted Buttment only way longer. The first show were going to try and do here is Witch Hunt...so check out that thread for more details...The place seems pretty rad, theres a bar, and whatnot...a good place to load equipment right into the room. outlets all over...clean, carpet, orange walls...pretty bitchen...yall have any thoughts...the only thing that bugs me is the $75 bucks, but we are going to pay it for this show...so it wont subtract from door money...the place is pretty artsy fartsy, but its way nice and in a good solid central, easy to find location...whats yer thoughts???

Cool. I hope this works out well. Does the place take a cut of the door money or let you/bands keep it all? Would the bar be open for shows and if so, is a bartender included in the $75 or would that be an additional fee to "rent" one?

Re: Des Moines Social Club
he said its disputable as long as we register as a non-profit...i would try and talk him down to 5percent if any...i think he said 10 though....not horrible...i think its worth it for a better show location though...and if we get shit going on regularly enough, then maybe he would just cut the 75dollar room rental or the door cut...

the bar is open during shows...and i don't know about the rest of your comment...you don't have to pay anything other than what booze costs...it seems like its open regardless...

Re: Des Moines Social Club
how do you expect a venue to be successful if you dont let in kids who dont have any money to pay for the show because they spent it on beer?

Re: Des Moines Social Club
If you are a booking company or whatever, they would normally take 20% of the door, but being the non profit punx that we are and us wanting the money made going directly to the bands, they said they'd most likely drop it to 10%, maybe even 5% because they are looking to build a music scene around the joint.... so, that's kinda cool.
Initially going in there, I was kinda put off with the artsy fartsy atmosphere, but when that jOFF dude showed us the room we could be renting out, it's nicely tucked away in the back of the place away from all the art. Kinda Botan Center vibe with a hallway connecting a bunch of rooms. The showspace is cool, so if Witchhunt goes over well, hopefully we can get some more shit going there.

One thing: I know you dudes are used to moshing into the walls at the HB, but don't do that at this new space.

Re: Des Moines Social Club
Thats good to hear. I was just wondering if there was a fee to "rent" a bartender, as that is how some of the art spaces in Chicago would operate if you wanted to book a show. If you wanted the bar to be open, you had to pay them to have a person bartend.TooManyHumyns wrote:the bar is open during shows...and i don't know about the rest of your comment...you don't have to pay anything other than what booze costs...it seems like its open regardless...
That's pretty sweet they are willing to work with you guys on the cut they take and also that they are wanting to build a scene around the place.Joe wrote: ....they said they'd most likely drop it to 10%, maybe even 5% because they are looking to build a music scene around the joint.... so, that's kinda cool.

Great I don't really care for the venues we have. So anything new is great. A flat rate of $75 is really good especially if it includes a sound system.
The fact is that if they do have a bar, they are going to make money. You may want to focus on that. You figure if you have a show that draws 100 people 80 of them are going to spend at least $15 on booze. That's $1200. If it's a Tuesday night or even a friday that's a good night. The only issue is all ages. See too many of these venues get greedy and stop seeing live music as what it is, which is promotion.
Good luck, I have to admit I'm more prone to go to a show there then I would HB. I think you will find there is a lot of people out there that feel the same.
You know I've always had this idea that involved a non-profit much like this one but with a focus on music. That would include a studio and resource side.

The bar there is open every night of the week. So I can't imagine they would charge you for a bartender. It is however, not anywhere near the stage if I am thinking of the same space that you are talking about Joe.
Could be cool, but be careful, there are certainly some snakes in that circle.

I'm usually down there at least once a day as a volunteer. Either actual labor or just volunteering my liver at the bar. I'd love to help out where its needed.
On complaint is the amount of olde maine on tap and the lack of PBR.

Do they supply the PA?
Do they have regular beer instead that Olde Main crap? I think it's great that they are supporting a local brewery, but I've tried their beer and it didn't taste very good to me.

i like this place. i've been to a few shows there. they have $2 beers. i think bartending is volunteer. there's a small stage next to the bar that i've seen bands play on, and then there's the huge room in the back.
It seems like the back room has a PA, but the front room doesn't. Don't know.

The front room has a PA very similiar to the HB PA set up. Did not work for hip hop, but would probably be adequate just running vocals through it.

the guy said that there is always a bartender on, and that if we had an event, then there definately would be.
there is a pa for that huge stage...we would be using the pa from the front and moving it to our room, which is right near that huge stage, its a yellow/orange room with a keg fridge, next to the belly dancing area or whatever...the room is similar to the size of the HB only longer...its all the way in the back...using that huge stage would be kinda sweet once shows get a lil more established there.

Agreed. This estimate is absolutely out of control. Especially for a punk show, no chance in hell.
....just kidding.
Re: Punk and Metal Shows @ the Des Moines Social Club...
Yeah, totally not going to happen. Maybe if you book the US Bombs at the Beechwood or something like that, but at a DIY punk show no way.
