Vegan/Vegetarian Friendly Beer (shocking...)
Alright many will not give a shit so disregard this thread if you're not interested in the subject altogether... for those of us interested: Audrey is giving some serious thought to starting a Drinking Veg Group in Ames and as a way of getting started I've been doing some research into beers that use animal products in their production and have been a bit shocked as to what I've found..
A few examples of beers that use isinglass (a fish derivitive) in their filtration processes are:
Guinness (notoriously, but unashamedly..)
Hobgoblin (And most wychwood beers)
Old Speckled Hen (as well as Tanner's Jack from the same brewery)
St. Peter's brewery in general
Millstream uses the product in times of high volume sales (i personally called them to confirm..)
Just to name a few.. I find this outrageous as a vegetarian alone... I don't need beer I drink filtered through fish bladders and I don't believe anyone who calls themselves vegetarian ,or beer purists for that matter, would disagree. I don't know if anyone else is shocked or appalled by this but I can't believe it.. here are a few wesites of interest:
http://www.barnivore.com
http://www.vegansociety.com/food/drink/alcohol
ps: cheers, tyler! I'm jealous you have access to such an abundant amount of amazing and locally produced 100% vegetarian friendly beer at any place you go! can't wait to come see you again and check that boner!

It's OK to eat fish, cause they don't have any feelings

I thought we established a long time ago that beer is overwhelmingly vegan with only a few and obscure exceptions? You're basically talking about starting a group based around avoiding Guinness and some cream based mixed drinks. I believe 95% of the drinking population does this without even thinking about it. Maybe you did find some info that says some shit that people actually drink uses fish products but I thought we cleared that up a while back ago.

Is Miller High Life vegan? I'd be really pissed if I found out it wasn't.

Re: Vegan/Vegetarian Friendly Beer (shocking...)
This is my point in listing a few other well known exceptions. yes, people know that guinness is not veggie but some other non-stouts such as british ales and even an Iowa made pale ale not being friendly is what I was pointing out is shocking.El Rhino wrote:I thought we established a long time ago that beer is overwhelmingly vegan with only a few and obscure exceptions?
And as to starting a vegan drinking group: it's no different than any other social group: these people get together one way or the other why not put a label and subject on these gatherings..

"Pretty sure" isn't good enough. How in the fuck am I supposed to feel good about washing my cheeseburger down with Miller High Life when in the back of my mind I'm wondering if it might not be vegan?Walking Thunder wrote:I'm pretty sure it's vegan.
