Paul Weller (The Jam) vs. Elvis Costello
The Clash of the Titans
Both artists were kind of associated with punk but distinctly not punk and considered themselves outsiders of the punk thing.
Both artists were considered fashion templates for their era - Elvis with the clean cut new wave image and Weller with the mod revival image. Both considered British icons.
Both artists considered brilliant songwriters.
Weller's solo act doesn't hold much of a candle to Elvis, I think. Not a big Style Council guy either.
Weller seemed a little edgier, although Elvis was edgy - just in a more ironic and dry sort of way.
Weller wins with style, being the "Modfather" and all.
Elvis has probably been a bigger influence on a wider range of artists than Weller.
Elvis has more forgettable material than Weller, although Elvis does have more material period.
So which is it?

They're both great songwriters and players, but I don't care enough about either one of them to say which one I like better.
I poop on Petland!
Re: Paul Weller (The Jam) vs. Elvis Costello
Into Costello big time. Never listened to much Jam though, so tough to compare.
....just kidding.
Re: Paul Weller (The Jam) vs. Elvis Costello
I just can't get excited about Costello. No care ever about Weller.

Your stock with me just took a dive, boyo. I would've figured you as at least a casual fan of one or both of these artists.
I pick Weller. Elvis has him beat in some departments, but The Jam is probably my favorite band. Been hooked on these guys since I picked up "In The City" when I was 15.
I figured that 515Crew would lean a little more towards Elvis and no care ever. I think Elvis has a little more appeal to the Vaudeville Mews-esque crowd and Weller would have a little more appeal to a grittier crowd. I guess the poll isn't over yet though.
Oh, and welcome back Nam.

I mean, I like Elvis Costello. He's fine. Just nothing that great to me. I do have a couple of his records on my Pod, so maybe I'll hit it up and see if my opinion changes.
Re: Paul Weller (The Jam) vs. Elvis Costello
ive always kinda brushed costello off as fashionartfagmusic. the jam always kinda seemed bri ishish. for trendy people that didnt like the clash. but then again i dont like the clash either. and dont really know anything about this "genre". much rather listen to Killing Joke.

Re: Paul Weller (The Jam) vs. Elvis Costello
Elvis wins.
I can't think of any artist who had a better series of records than My Aim is True / This Year's Model / Armed Forces. Of course Elvis has his share of awful records, too... but it's to be expected when you steadily release material for 30 years.
This would be more difficult if we were comparing Elvis to the Jam... Weller's solo stuff doesn't do much for me. Even then, Elvis is the better songwriter. I love the Jam but not for their lyrics.
If I were the type to make top ten lists I would probably put Less Than Zero and Lipstick Vogue in my top ten favorite songs.

WHOOPS! I haven't given either a listen.
Do I get any credit for having Less Than Zero as one of my favorite novels?
