HAUNTED BASEMENT: RE-UP

Post by Potter » Mon Sep 15, 2008 8:41 am

Joe's leaving and he (and others) has worked really hard to maintain a pretty slick DIY venue and I'd hate to see it crumble. I think Nate (Moltar) is going to continue booking shows but it would be tight to help clean and fix up the place.

Things that can be done:

-Furniture is thrashed, could use replacements.
-Cool Graffiti (Nate?)
-Shelves/tables for demos/zines/merch
I Think I'm going to actually be building some shelves but I could use help with the tools. I'm kind of limited to a hack saw and a hammer right now.
-Better turn outs at shows
-Pay the fucking donation (please.)

But seriously, get involved. It could be fun to hang out and do some home improvement there. I believe November is a pretty slow month for shows but October sounds like a do-able groundbreaker.

By the way, I don't know how many of you I know personally. If you wanna get in touch my name is Zach. I wore the V for Vendetta mask at the BMF/Phobia/Impaled show. Shits dope. Give me a call. 5155777443

that place could be immaculate if they had the foresight to take care of it. right now it's a third world hellhole.
that said, it WOULD totally suck if it closed down.

Right now the place is really fucking clean.
And it's really hard to keep the place clean with show after show after show after show.

I'm sick of my friends. I'm sick of people saying they'll help out and then never follow though.
I'm about ready to cut all ties with everyone I've ever known.

You don't know how much I wish the Haunted Basement was around during my time in Des Moines. I remember going to "the office" on my summer off from O-town a year ago, but I'm too tied up here now to have ever made it to a show there since it's recent evolution into a venue.

That said, I think everyone in the DSM area should stop and appreciate such a unique DIY venue and support it in every way. The only DIY shit I can find in Omaha is all directly influenced by the local, dominant indie music scene, and while I enjoy a certain degree of that, all I really wanna do is thrash like fuck and get blasted at a house party.

I was cleaning after the show tonight cause I think we, and my band have taken it a little for granted with all the help you've given us. SO from now I'm gonna be sure to pick up my trash and what others leave behind. Tonight was an awesome show, and thanks to everyone who came out.

I haven't done any booking, and won't be until I have enough free time. All of our booking comes from Joe, Thom, Servo, Wiggins, Krook, Elliot, and some single shows from others. I just do what I can to keep the place ready for shows and afloat financially and other. I also run our recording.

What the place can use is more local bands and more people to keep coming to shows. The basement is tight as fuck and everyone who has been coming by has been really good about donating and supporting the bands.

Hmm been there, done that. It really sucks to try and do everything yourself while all around everyone thinks they could do it better and love to tell you all their Great suggestions. But when it comes down to leather to pavement they are all nowhere to be found.

From time to time, I get one of these "You should jump start the scene and start booking shows." I always reply, "I'll get on it as soon as you start supporting the one that is already happening. Mean while, you are between my Guinness and me."
I paid my dues but I lost my Receipt.

This is stupid drama where there should be none. Yes, Joe has been the main artery of booking for this place and has put in tons of work. There are a lot of other people who care also. If you have to go away to discover your community/your band/your friends are not just about you, then have at it.

This isn't about me smart guy.
This is about people standing on the sidelines saying lots of dumb shit about how things could be better and not lifting a finger to help.

I've witnessed it, you've witnessed it, it's not drama, it's real.

The place is really fucking clean and i'm extremely grateful for the help people seem to want give to this. I think when I get on my feet financially I'm going to buy some nice lumber and build up some shelves for the place so you can keep all the equipment off the ground. I also want to turn the back room (equipment room) into a zine/bootlegged comic distro. Any ideas?
