Instead, all couples wishing to be legally joined should be recognized as such under civil unions. Then, if desired/applicable, the couple could have a religiously recognized marriage. To me, this seems like the best course of action.

I never understood the reason the government needs to be involved in the first place except for the money they collect from marriage licenses and all the money lawyers make later when half of these people get divorced.. well... it's not equal if you still say things like, "you can do this, but you can't do it the same way we do it." but regardless... like shane is saying, unless you're willing to give same sex couples the EXACT same rights as opposite sex couples, then you really do need to get the word marriage out of the legal system completely. we can ALL have the same rights to civil unions. if religions want to then be exclusive and backwards, let 'em. that's what they've been doing since they were first dreamt up anyway.
