Probably end up being two most downloaded KY Jelly Belly recordings ever.

Regarding the Just Do It! set, I am going to cut all the songs into individual tracks and repost them. This is what I have been doing with all the other sets that Kyle has been posting, I just haven't reposted them.

Also, it's really cool of you to record all these shows, Kyle.

Thanks everybody!
Shane how are you dividing these into tracks? I've tried to record them track by track but I have to stop and then start again and it takes a few seconds, a few times I've cut off the beggining of songs so I've just decided to do them as one whole track, please repost the shows track by track or maybe tell me how so I can start doing that.

When I started doing this I was kind of nervous about people saying "I don't want to go to this show I'll just wait for Kyle to post it"
I don't think anyone really does think that but Nick I think I've seen you at one show, Banner Pilot, the one thing I DO NOT want is for people to get lazy and not go to shows, I hope that's not the case but I will continue to record every show that I can get too.

I'll be honest, the only shows I have actually checked out of your recordings are the Banner Pilot/Manix/Gateway Distric/Tyborn Jig/SMMS show that I was at and the Witch Hunt show (because I wanted to try and hear the shit that went down during that set). I was just being genuine in that I think it is cool you are doing this. It is sort of like a little audio documentary of the HB. And from the few shows I did download, you did a good job recording them. That is why I said it was "sweet", because I do think it is rad that someone is capturing and documenting these shows.

These recordings have zero impact on why I don't go to many shows, I hope the same can be said of everyone else. I have other reasons why I am not able to make it to many shows. I will be there tonight though. I don't think we met the night of the Banner Pilot show, did we? Maybe I did and just don't remember the name/face? Say "Hi" tonight.

It's easy to do within Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), as you just import the mp3 file, highlight what you want to be a separate track and select "Export selection as mp3". You need the LAME mp3 encoder to export as mp3, but that is available on that website. All of this is free.

What I personally use is Cubase because it's a lot easier and faster to apply and change the EQ, compression, and gating of the entire 10-30 minute track. Cubase isn't free, though. I won't be spending as much time on the average show as I will be on Just Do It!'s last show, because this is really all anyone has of them recording-wise, whereas most other bands have their tracks professionally done. I should be done with it by tomorrow night.

@ Shane - Are you noticing any difference in the audio quality after you transcode the origianl recording to a new MP3 file that is split by individual track?

Also, Kyle, does your recording device record in MP3 natively or is it a .WAV file or something that you convert to MP3?

After applying EQ, compression, and gating to the tracks, the quality improves significantly (in my opinion). The improvement mitigation by the repeated mp3 encoding is negligible at worst.

Thanks man I will definitely try that!

My recorder, which is a Tascam Dr-1, http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=241890 and it can record MP3 (32kbps-320kbps, I usually record MP3 at 320kbps I can record about 7 hours at that rate and it sounds good (no wishy washy sounds), WAV (16 bit-24bit) I have a few shows recorded in WAV format but it takes forever to upload on mediafire so I've stopped messing with it, but it can record 24 hours of material in WAV.

Hmmm....that's pretty sweet it can record directly to MP3. I wonder what type of encoding it is doing on the fly like that? I also wonder if recording in 24-bit .WAV and then transcoding the .WAV files to MP3 (using Audacity or some other audio program) with LAME encoding would give a better overall sound? Not saying the sound is bad in the least (it is actually really good for a small handheld device like that) but just curious?

All LAME encoding does is optimize the quality to file size ratio by using a variable bit rate. 320kbps is the best in terms of audio quality, but leads to larger file sizes, while 32kpbs is the worst, but with smaller file sizes. Thus, when there is little or no audio (i.e. silence at the ends of tracks), LAME automatically reduces the quality to 32kpbs while increasing it to 320kpbs when it is required. So, since Kyle is already recording at 320kbps, there would be no way to improve the mp3 sound quality in terms of bit rates, even if the original recording was a wav file.

I really appreciate the fact that Kyle's recorder can create stereo images. Makes everything seem a lot less one-dimensional.

There it is, the last JDI! show. I EQ'd it, compressed it, made it louder and then cut it into individual tracks. I think it sounds better now. It's in mp3 format, but there is no discernible difference between the mp3 and the WAV other than one is about 10 times smaller than the other.
